Introduction
We dedicate these pages of our personal family letters to our families and also to the "brick-wall" researchers searching for that crystallizing clue. The time period covered by the greater volume encompasses the second half of the 19th century. A high percentage of the Watkins Hirst group was created over a ten year span by residents of Grant County, Wisconsin, Trumbull County, Ohio and northern California. Many names of and news of births, deaths and marriages of friends's are mentioned. Similar information regarding residents and activities in eastern Missouri, northern California and Hill County, Texas may be be found in the Clark Proffitt letters of the 1850s. However these are mostly personal letters and surely of greatest interest, genealogical value and emotional nurture to the families of the authors. It is to our fore bearers that we are most grateful for their awareness and the warmth of family they have endowed. We hope in the near future to present more completely their story in printed narrative. W. Lorraine Watkins, Dawsonville, Georgia Orienting information:
